Boomerang: Building Community Right Across East Park.
Wolverhampton has come a long way since ‘Lady Wulfrun‘ founded it in 985. “Out of Darkness comes Light” can be considered a very apt motto for city that started out with ‘6 villagers‘, ‘30 smallholders‘, ‘14 slaves‘ and ‘19 ploughs‘ (ref: The Doomesday Book) ; and now has a population in excess of 249,500 people (ref: 2011 Census. (The number of ploughs is unknown)).
So Wolverhampton has grown into a significant city in the heart of England. Of the 20 wards that make up Wolverhampton, ‘East Park‘ is quite unusual, even unique, especially within Wolverhampton. It being the only one that has managed to effectively combine the words ‘East‘ and ‘Park‘. Others have tried, but only ‘East Park‘ has succeeded.
Now, building on that ground breaking success, “East Park Management Group” has set-up ‘Boomerang‘, a community based shop to enable, support and build the East Park community.
Why Build Community?
It’s important to understand why you need a community. Community touches on a human need, we need to feel a sense of community around us to survive and evolve.
“the apparent ‘loss of community’ in society as a key cause of social disintegration and the emergence of many harmful behaviours. They see building community as a means to increase social justice, individual well-being and reduce negative impacts of otherwise disconnected individuals”. (From wikipedia.org)
Are we not happiest when we feel a sense of belonging; that chance to be part of something bigger, a community? Of course we do.
Most neighbourhoods become communities when people don’t feel like they are being left out. Just spend a little time reading some of the testimonials that the ‘Boomerang’ shop and staff have received to understand what it means to be in service to your community.
Building community is not about funding, culture, age, gender, education, political persuasion or leaving it for others. Politicians may take the credit for it, but they don’t create community, people do. It’s about meeting people where they are ; supporting them and enabling them to make a positive contribution
Not sure where to get started?
Of course, you are in it to change the world, but where do you start? Well, Community comes in many forms and they all start small. It does take time to develop a true community, built on relationships formed through genuine interactions with trust and respect, but the key is to start. Community changes when you make changes.
The reality is, you can’t meet the needs of all the people, but by choosing just one thing that you can make a contribution to, your actions could change the culture of the whole area. It is not hard to get started and East Park’s Boomerang shop is there to help.
So now, take a little time to look at what it is you really hope to accomplish, and then think about how your community might benefit from it and even be there to help you. If you would like further ideas on what you could do, you may wish to look here, as they put here “you will find a variety of community service ideas to choose from if you’re considering volunteering your time or completing a service project”.
Just one more thing to think about.
“This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.”
So what is stopping you?
